You
Not only
Make my heart swell and
My body purr.
You also (best of all)
Make my brain bounce. And that!
That’s the key that
Unlocks
All the rest.
The Toolkit
FINDING YOURSELF
There are a huge numbers of different personality tests available today. It’s not necessary to do many, but they are useful in establishing a relatively objective picture of how you see yourself, compared to the results of many millions of others. They are also very interesting to use as a discussion basis with any potential partner, as the differences that arise between you will become quite visible, and you will have tools to name and explain them. Once you’ve done two or three of them, the messages you discover about yourself are usually coming across loud and clear. It may not be news, but it’s helpful to clarify and confirm.
Helen Fisher (Match.com) 4 Types39
Are you explorer, builder, director or negotiator? Helen Fisher is the science behind online dating website empire Match.com. She has developed a test that identifies your two top drivers, and suggests how successfully different pairs of types fit. I’m an explorer-negotiator, and Tim is a director-explorer. It is true that the endless curiosity and desire to learn and grow that characterises our marriage is a key characteristic of the explorer type, of which Fisher herself is one. She says that explorers are more likely to switch partners, whereas builders will be the least likely. This is the first time I’ve seen any research on the link between personality types and marital choices.

Enneagram
The Enneagram is a tool created in the 1950s, though based on earlier thinking, for describing nine different personality types. The interesting factor here is that each type has nine levels of evolution, each reflecting a progression towards a “best self.” I have also found that the site’s tool for checking compatibilities across types resonates quite powerfully with many. (Full disclosure: I’m type Seven and Tim is type Six.)

Across Nationalities – Geert Hofstede test
These tests are used in global companies to help managers understand and work across different cultures. But I’ve found them very helpful at home, too, where the same challenges arise. If you are romantically involved with someone with a different cultural background, or even if you are yourself a mix of different cultural heritages, this test will help you discover whether you are a typical representative of the country you hail from, and how that compares to other nationalities. Fascinating and useful. You get your own score, and that of three countries that interest you.

FINDING OTHERS
Three Pots of Jam Analysis: What are the major relationships of your life? Feel free to add more, but focus on the most meaningful ones to you. Give each relationship a name that symbolizes the chapter of your life it occupies and the kind of couple you were (e.g. First Love, Journey through Hell, Summer of Life). Each partnership has its own particular dynamic. What was yours? What did you get from/ give to each? What did you learn about yourself from each of these experiences? Confucius advised to “study the past if you would define the future.
